The ghost pepper, also known as bhut jolokia, is one of the hottest chili peppers in the world. Native to northwest India, the ripe peppers are bright orange in color and they grow to a length of 4 inches. The pepper is 400 times hotter than a jalapeno. The seeds appear light tan in color. You can grow the ghost peppers in most hot climates, but they need to be germinated indoors to get an early start on the growing season. Instructions: 1.Fill a seed starting flat with high quality commercial potting soil. 2.Pour distilled water into a spray bottle. Mist the soil to moisten it, but avoid overwatering the soil or it will become soggy. 3.Sow the ghost pepper seeds 1/4 inch deep. Space the seeds 2 inches apart. 4.Place the flat in a warm and sunny location with a temperature range between 80 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. They require a hot temperature to germinate. A south-facing window works well for germination because they will need six to eight hours of sunlight each day. 5.Water the soil to keep it moist. Never allow the soil to become soggy or dry. 6.Transplant the seedlings outdoors when the temperatures reach 80 degrees and they grow two sets of leaves. Acclimate the seedlings to the weather by leaving them outdoors for one hour on the first day. Gradually leave them outdoors for one hour longer every day for one week until they are accustomed to the weather 7.Dig a hole with a garden trowel 3 to 4 inches deep. Plant the ghost pepper plant at the same depth as the growing container. Space the plants 1 foot apart. 8.Pack the soil around the pepper plants. Water them with 1 inch of water weekly or more often if the weather remains dry. 9.Apply 2 inches of mulch at the base of the pepper plants. This will prevent weeds and retain water moisture. 10.Harvest the ghost peppers when the skin appears red or orange in color. The peppers will also feel firm.
